The Rugae

One-of-a-kind handcrafted wood sculpture featuring beautiful high-alpine driftwood, sustainably sourced from the Colorado rockies. Rugae comes from the Latin word for "wrinkles" or "folds," and it really tells the story of time etched into living wood. I wanted to highlight the dynamic flow of this aged timber, celebrating the deep ridges and rippling contours carved by decades of sun, wind, and rain. The wood has these sweeping spires and cresting waves, and I traced its deep crevices with luminous gold leaf to catch the light and create a radiant contrast against the honey-toned grain. Suspended above a sleek black base on slender steel pins, the piece appears to just float effortlessly. It’s a deeply textured statement piece that brings unrefined luxury and warmth to a foyer console or executive desk.
