SCULPTURE
The Kabatas

One-of-a-kind handcrafted wood sculpture featuring beautiful high-alpine driftwood, sustainably sourced from the Colorado rockies. Kabatas is derived from roots meaning "rough stone" or "grounded rock." It's a piece about enduring strength, capturing how timber that's been battered by the elements eventually takes on the immovable presence of mountain stone. I worked with this dark, rich wood to highlight its dramatic reaching spires, natural negative space, and deep grain. I embedded veins of crushed turquoise throughout its fissures to trace the contours like precious mineral deposits. Elevated on a slender steel post above a matte-black base, it balances raw visual weight with a sense of weightlessness. It’s a compelling focal point that bridges stone-like intrigue with modern minimalism.
